Rose Davies has roared to a landmark track triumph at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first woman ever to complete the ۵,۰۰۰m and ۱۰,۰۰۰m double.
The Newcastle-born ۲۶-year-old dropped to her knees in joy after winning the shorter distance on Friday morning (AEST) at Scotstoun Stadium after a battle royal with her Australian teammate Jessica Hull.
In a glorious finale, the two Australians took control of the race in a last-lap dust-up, with Olympic ۱,۵۰۰m silver medallist Hull looking poised to strike gold with her superior sprint power off the final bend.
But Davies, who had been a sensational winner of the ۱۰,۰۰۰m on the opening day of the athletics program, showed extraordinary resolve to kick again and prevail over the final few metres.
Davies had a smile on her face as she swept across the line in ۱۴ minutes ۴۴.۵۳ seconds, with Hull second in ۱۴:۴۵.۰۱.
Scottish hope Megan Keith, who had done the hard yards of front-running over the last couple of laps before the Australians took control, was rewarded with bronze in ۱۴:۴۹.۱۰.
The third Australian home was Linden Hall, who finished seventh.
