Rescue teams face ‘race against time’ in search for trapped survivors as death toll in Japan rises to at least ۱۳ – as it happened

• The Kumamoto region of Kyushi island in Japan has experienced another “strong earthquake” this afternoon, according to local media. The news outlet RKK, based in the city of Kumamoto, reported that an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of ۵.۸ hit the Amakusa and Ashikita regions at about ۱۰.۲۰pm (۴.۲۰pm BST), according to the Japan meteorological agency.

• Japan’s Mainichi newspaper has reported some remarks from Akio Yoshida, the president of retail company Aeon which operated a shopping centre that partially collapsed after yesterday’s earthquake and a subsequent explosion. Yoshida told a press briefing that three workers at the shopping centre in Kumamuto are still missing. He confirmed three people were killed, all of whom were employees.

• Weather officials in Japan have warned of another hot day across wide areas of the country, including in the southern Kumamoto prefecture on the island of Kyushu where the earthquake hit. Temperatures are forecast to reach ۳۵C in Kumamoto, according to the Japan meteorological agency, with highs of ۳۸C in Miyazaki on Kyushu island.

• Toyoto and Honda said they will suspend operations in their factories in Kumamoto in southern Japan until Friday. “The ‌situation, including aftershocks ‌and recovery efforts, is changing daily,” Toyota said in a statement. “We will continue to prioritise safety above all else.”

There was a voice coming from the collapsed house, and I could see a hand,” Tomohide Nagata, a volunteer firefighter, told the Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun. “One of our senior members crawled in and pulled him out. He was bleeding from the head, but I’m so glad he survived.”

Nagata had heard a noise coming from one completely flattened home in the rural town of Hikawa, close to the epicentre of Tuesday’s ۶.۸-magnitude earthquake in southern Japan. The town was one of the areas hardest hit, with numerous older houses collapsing. Terrified of the ongoing aftershocks, many residents spent Tuesday night in their cars outside Hikawa’s town hall, where staff distributed food and drinks.

At least ۱۳ people were killed and hundreds injured when the earthquake struck the island of Kyushu. The prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, said on Wednesday: “There are people who are still waiting to be rescued, and it’s a race against time. We will go all out to find and rescue as many people as we can.”

Iwaoka Shigemi, ۷۹, and his wife, Michiyo, ۷۷, had escaped from their house and spent the night sleeping in their car in Hikawa, according to the Mainichi Shimbun. With temperatures expected to reach ۳۵C on Wednesday, they were now worried about the risk of heatstroke.

Suemi Nagata, ۷۹, was unable to escape Hikawa by car because her garage had been destroyed but had made it to the town hall with her husband and older sister. “The lateral shaking was worse than the Kumamoto earthquake ۱۰ years ago, and it was terrifying,” she told the town’s local newspaper. “Just to have survived with my life is something to be grateful for.”

The explosion at Aeon Mall, which severely damaged the shopping centre about an hour after the initial earthquake, was seen by a taxi driver who had parked his car nearby.

Speaking to RKK, a local Japanese TV station, he said: “There was a sudden bang, and it felt like a wall was closing in on us. Everything went completely white, and I couldn’t see anything.”

Dashcam footage published by Japanese national broadcaster NHK shows that the explosion happened on the south side of the Aeon Mall, near the Midorikawa River. Three people were killed after the explosion, and three remain missing.

The agency recorded ۲۰۰ earthquakes with an intensity of ۱ or higher in the ۲۴ hours following the first earthquake, RKK reported.

In the Nuyamazu district, a pair of temple gates at a ۱۶th-century Buddhist temple collapsed.

They had just been repaired five years ago.

Yuki Kiyozumi, deputy chief priest at the temple, recalled how she had to crawl on the floor because the shaking was so violent.

She had just returned home from a meeting and was about to feed her cat.

“I don’t even know if or how we can rebuild them again,” she said, while cleaning up damaged ornaments and furniture.

A ۲۳-year-old woman who worked at the Aeon shopping centre, where three people were killed and three remain missing, has told the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper about the scenes on the ground when the earthquake struck.

She said the shaking was so strong that it was impossible to stand, knocking over mannequins and clothing racks. She was able to evacuate the building with three others, and escaped the subsequent explosion.

“Even when I evacuated outside the building, I saw other employees guiding people to safety,” she said. “I also saw some people going back inside, perhaps to check for safety, so I’m worried that they might have been affected [by the explosion].”

Japan’s Mainichi Shimbun newspaper has been speaking to people at the Nippon Paper Industries factory in Yatsushiro, where a chimney collapsed on to the site.

“I never imagined something like this would happen,” said a ۳۳-year-old man who worked at the factory. “I never thought that the chimney could collapse. I’m worried about the people inside.”

He was off duty and at home when the earthquake struck, and was unharmed. The names of those rescued and those trapped have not yet been released. “Someone I know might be affected,” he said.

According to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, as of ۲pm local time today seven people had been rescued. Of those rescued, five have died and two were injured. The whereabouts of four people remain unknown.

The second floor of the shopping centre collapsed, with three people believed to be still trapped, according to authorities.

Addressing concerns over a possible gas leak (see post at ۰۹:۲۸), Yoshida told reporters the shopping centre has been using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) since its opening in ۲۰۰۵, and that no problems such as gas leaks have been reported in the past.

As we wait for updates on the explosion at Aeon shopping centre in Kumamoto, earlier the chief government spokesperson Minoru Kihara said a gas smell was detected inside the building during yesterday’s search by firefighters and police, local media have reported.

Kihara stressed that the cause of the explosion, which happened about an hour after the earthquake struck, is still under investigation.

Toyoto and Honda said they will suspend operations in their factories in Kumamoto in southern Japan until Friday.

“The ‌situation, including aftershocks ‌and recovery efforts, is changing daily,” Toyota said in a statement. “We will continue to prioritise safety above all else.”

Honda Motor said the suspension would allow repairs to quake-damaged parts of the factory.

Eight people ⁠were pulled from the rubble of a ​partially collapsed Aeon shopping centre near the city of Kumamoto following an apparent explosion that occurred around an hour after the earthquake, according to reports. Aeon said four workers at the shopping centre remained unaccounted for.

“I thought a bomb had gone off,” Takateru Sonoda, ۴۱, who runs a hair salon and cafe near the shopping centre, told the Japanese Jiji Press news agency.

“There were people calling on others to evacuate and sirens were ringing out. Nearby ⁠roads were gridlocked, it was a state of panic.”

Seven people are also still missing at the Nippon Paper Industries factory where a chimney collapsed on to the site. Japan’s Mainichi newspaper reported that four people were rescued from the rubble at the paper mill, including two who were seriously injured.

Nearly ۳۷,۰۰۰ homes were still without electricity, ۹,۵۰۰ homes were without gas and communication networks were not working in some areas, chief government spokesperson Minoru Kihara told reporters. More than ۹,۰۰۰ people left their homes to stay in more than ۵۰۰ shelters, Kihara added.
